X-ray diffraction studies provide evidence of: (1) Variation of the C-C bond length in alkali metal graphites and in graphite nitrate. The bond expands when the intercalate is an electron donor and contracts when it is an electron acceptor. (2) Progressive in-plane displacement of carbon-layers (nongraphitic stacking) following intercalate ordering in Form II graphite nitrate.

## Abstract Three new layered compounds were synthesised by immersing a pyrographite platelet in a molten CaโLi alloy creating a new graphite intercalation compound family. The samples were studied by Xโray and neutron diffraction, revealing that the intercalated sheets are polylayered. The study o
Intercalation compounds of natural and commercial graphites with MgCl, have been synthesized by a high temperature heterogeneous phase reaction. The stoichiometry of the compounds was found by chemical analysis, and the structure has been examined by powder X-ray diffraction. The intercalation compo
