CARBON 70. The graphitization of organic compounds-III. Heterocyclic nitrogen derivatives of anthracene and phenthrene I. G. Isaacs (Akco S@er Research ~~~~~s, figure Falls, New York).
Anthracene, phe~anthrene, and several nitrogen heterocycles, structurally identical to these compounds except that they contained one or two nitrogen atoms in place of ring carbon atoms, were carbonized (600ยฐC) and the resultant chars calcined (1300ยฐC) and graphitized. Crystallographic data were obtained on the graphitized and calcined materials. The 600ยฐC chars and 1300% calcined chars obtained from the nitrogen heterocycles were analyzed for nitrogen. The crystallographic data show a definite similarity within the two classes of compounds based on ring structure. That is, the molecules with the ring structure of phenanthrene yield carbons with properties very similar to phenanthrene, whether they contain none, one, or two nitrogen atoms. Similar conclusions can be reached for the compounds with the anthracene structures. From this, one may deduce that the initial reaction products and chars are similar within the two classes of compounds studied, even though the chars from the nitrogen heterocycles contained most of their original nitrogen. Furthermore, some nitrogen remained in all the 1300ยฐC carbons prepared from the heterocycles. The char from 7,8-benzoquinoline was investigated in more detail by heating it in 100ยฐC increments to 1400% and analyzing the char from each stage for nitrogen. Volatile compounds emanating from the char were also identified. The above results will be discussed with implications such findings may have affecting the properties of artificial graphite.
