In the title compound, [Cu(C~12~H~6~N~2~O~2~)~3~](ClO~4~)~2~·4.5H~2~O, the Cu^II^ atom is in a distorted octahedral environment with unequal Cu—N distances, due to the Jahn–Teller elongation of the two Cu—N bonds in __trans__ positions. The crystal studied was an inversion twin..
