38. The use of pyrolytic graphite in uncooled rocket nozzles

A. C. Parmee (Research Division, Rocket Propulsion Establishment, Aybbwy, Buckinghamshire, U.K.). Tests in rocket motors over a range of combustion conditions have shown pyrolytic graphite to be markedly superior to other forms of carbon and graphite. Two nozzle designs incorporating pyrolytic graphite in the form of a shell and disc were used to establish its limits of performance over a wide range of rocket motor conditions. The results of this work, techniques used in the manufacture and testing of the pyrolytic graphite nozzles are described. The results suggest there is a possible link between deposition conditions, which cause slight differences in structure and erosion resistance.

The influence of surface functional groups on activated carbons on the adsorption and desorption of lithium ions, present in trace amounts in aqueous solution, has been studied in the absence and presence of an applied electric field. Application of an electric current during the experiments dramat
