✦ Synopsis
The title compound, C~20~H~24~N~4~
^2+^·2Br^−^·2H~2~O, was prepared from benzimidazole by stepwise alkylation with ethyl bromide followed by 1,2-bromoethane. The dication lies about a twofold rotation axis through the centre of the ethanyl group that links the two planar benzimidazolium residues. The asymmetric unit also contains a bromide anion and a solvent water molecule. The two benzimidazole ring systems are parallel.
