✦ Synopsis

P NMR spectra of isolated blood-perfused pig lungs were obtained by degassing the lungs in vivo to remove field inhomogeneities caused by air-tissue interfaces. The spectra show the presence of ATP, phosphodiester, inorganic phosphate, and phosphomonoester, but no phosphocreatine. All the metabolites remained stable for more than 4 h when the lungs were perfused with oxygenated blood. Blood gas tensions, glucose concentration, pH, and temperature were controlled throughout the experiment. During anoxia or isch-

The phosphorus N M R spectra of isolated perfused rat liver displays a prominent inorganic phosphate peak at 2.76 f 0.05 ppm relative to liver glycerolphosphocholine at 0.49 ppm. From titration curves of phosphoruscontaining compounds this corresponds to a pH of 7.4. The spectra also display a shoul

## Abstract An NMR method to study on‐line mitochondrial function was developed. Mitochondria were maintained in a stable physiologic state in agarose beads that were continuously superfused with oxygenated buffer at 28Β°C. Oxidative function of both heart and liver mitochondria was evaluated with ^
