The structure of the title compound, C 13 H 16 O 4 , comprises a non-planar chiral molecule where the cyclohexene double bond is distinctly shorter [1.335 (2) A ˚] than the neighbouring C-C single bonds (>1.4 A ˚).

In the title compound, C 19 H 13 NO 5 , the five fused rings are essentially coplanar, while one of the O-Me bonds lies almost perpendicular to that plane. The molecule is stabilized by C-HÁ Á ÁO intermolecular hydrogen bonds, which form zigzag polymeric chains parallel to the b axis.
