In the two independent molecules of the title compound, C 16 H 16 O 3 S, the dihedral angles between the benzene rings are 79.06 (2) and 78.46 (2) . The SO 2 C 5 rings are not planar and have boat-chair conformations.

In the title compound, C 35 H 42 O 4 , the chromene ring is in a distorted half-chair conformation and the cyclohexadienone ring adopts a screw-boat conformation. Intramolecular O-HÁ Á ÁO hydrogen bonds involving the carbonyl and hydroxyl groups are observed.
