The 'H and "P NMR spectra of a series of compounds containing the P -N -P " skeleton including CI,PNMeP(Z)CI, (Z = 0 or S), CI,P-NMe.P(O)ClNM~, P,(NMe)& (Z=S, n=1-3; Z=Se, n=l), XP(NBu3,P(Z)X (X=Cl, Z = O or S; X=OMe, Z=S or Se, X=NMe, Z=S or Se; X=NE&, Z=Se), CIPNBu'P4)(CI)NMe 4 = 0 or S), P(NBu?,P(Se)NMe(CH,),~e, and Ph,PNRP(S)Ph, (R=Me, Et) have been obtained. 'Hq3'P} double resonance, and in selected cases, "P-('H, =Se} and "P_('H, "P} triple resonance experiments, indicate that zJ(pNPv) is positive in acyclic compounds, negative in most cyclic or cage compounds, and furthermore, is related to the conformation adopted by the p -N bond.
