✦ Synopsis
Certain petroleum cokes produce "doublet" (001) X-ray diffraction peaks after they have been heattreated in the 1300" to 1900°C temperature range. These cokes undergo an irreversible volume expansion in this same range. If an additive such as Fe,O, which suppresses the volume expansion is added, the "doublet" (001) reflections do not appear. X-ray and helium density measurements performed on cokes with and without Fe,O, present, indicate that a significant increase in closed pore volume has resultedduring the volume expansion. This work describes the relationship between the volume expansion, increase in closed pore volume and doublet (001) reflections.
