In the the title compound, C 23 H 17 Br 2 NO 4 , the two bromophenyl rings are almost coplanar, and perpendicular to the nitrophenyl ring. The carbonyl groups are coplanar with their adjacent bromophenyl rings.

In the title compound, C 19 H 13 Br 2 NO 4 S 2 , the two bromothienyl rings have different orientations with respect to the carbonyl groups. The nitro group is almost coplanar with the benzene ring to which it is attached.

The crystal structure of the title compound, C~14~H~10~N~2~O~5~·H~2~O, is stabilized by inversion-related O—H...O and C—H...O intermolecular hydrogen bonds and also by π–π interactions. The dihedral angle between the phthalide group and the benzene ring is 51.45 (8)°.
