A study was conducted to test the capability of the 14 N nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) method to discriminate qualitatively and quantitatively among different forms of piroxicam. Samples of commercial piroxicam form I and its monohydrate were obtained on the local market. Additionally, samples

✦ Synopsis
The 14N NQR frequencies measured at 77 K for the amine group of the 1:l salts of nitric acid with methylurea and 1,3and 1,l-dimethylurea and the phosphoric acid salt of 1,3-dimethylurea are reported. The analysis of the NQR data showed that the N loses population from its m orbital. The decrease in rn population is partially compensated by an increase in the population of the N-C u bonds. The loss of m population is enhanced when the H atoms of the amine group are substituted by electron-donating groups Such as CH,.

While this change is expected to destabilize helical structures, the amount of destabilization is not known.
