✦ Synopsis
The title molecule, C~24~H~26~N~2~O~2~, has its central C=C double bond placed on an inversion centre, and both indolin-2-one units are coplanar. The three terminal C atoms of the two butyl groups are disordered over two positions; the site occupancy factors are ca. 0.54 and 0.46. The central C=C bond exhibits an E configuration and is conjugated with the indole heterocycles. This aromatic character is related to the planarity of the isoindigo core and is reminiscent of that observed in stilbene.

The molecule of 2-benzyl-1,3-diphenylpropane-1,3-dione, C 22 H 18 O 2 , being a diketo tautomer, shows different stereochemistry from that of the closed-ring cis-ketoenol tautomer of the parent 1,3-diphenylpropane-1,3-dione. The molecular packing involves C-HÁ Á ÁO andstacking interactions.
The title compound, C~17~H~10~N~2~O~4~, consists of two phthalimide units connected by a methylene bridge. The N—C—N bond angle is 110.64 (12)°. In the crystal structure, the dihedral angle between the two phthalimide units in one molecule is 88.96 (2)°. The crystal packing is stabilized by the π–π
