Pretén ser un fragment d’un diari apòcrif de l’escriptor Rudyard Kipling, amagat sota el nom de Sir John Archibald Hasting. El 1890, Sir John busca per Londres la companyia d’una jove per conversar de cultura. És un home que passa de la cinquantena, es troba sol i una mica desencantat de la vida. Una jove atractiva, Katherine Harrington, accedeix a narrar-li històries mítiques, però deixa clar des del començament que no hi haurà cap mena de contacte físic entre tots dos. La fantasia de Katherine reinventant, amb un marcat deix sensual, les històries de Pigmalió, de Circe i Ulisses, de Píram i Tisbe, d’Atenea o Polifem, submergeixen Sir John en un univers sensitiu, càlid i confús. A través d’aquestes deu més una nits l’acostament entre la jove i l’intel·lectual sembla inevitable.
