Performance parameters for diffusion pumps are reviewed. Increasing user requirements have extended the number of parameters, which must be studied; for example stability of pumping and mechanical vibration are of high importance for some applications. The ways such characteristics can be influenced by design are discussed. Some modern pump fluids and their influence on pump performance are discussed.
