✦ Synopsis

The molecule of the title compound, C 12 H 10 O 2 , is planar, with an intramolecular O-HÁ Á ÁO hydrogen bond between the hydroxy group and the carbonyl O atom. The structure is stabilized by intermolecular C-HÁ Á Á and offsetstacking interactions.

The stable title hemiacetal, C 15 H 14 O 3 , has been prepared. One attractive feature in the structure is the gauche conformation determined by stereoelectronic factors. A hydrogen bond is formed between two neighbouring molecules, in which the hydroxyl group acts as both donor and acceptor.
