In Mi Xiang, besides Mi Xiang-“an innocent girl” like Baidou, there was another educated youth from Shanghai, Song Lan which not only made us feel something fresh beyond Bai Dou, but also realize the self-break efforts and hope of Dong Libo. At a farmland in Xiayedi of Xinjiang, Mi Xiang who loved water from the region south of Yangtze River and Song Lan who was an ordinary Shanghai educated youth had different destinies due to different views of love. Mi Xiang was an innocent girl in pursuit of true love, but she was mercilessly abandoned in pregnancy by the lover-Xu Mingle who went after the political future, so she began a self-indulgent and painful life; Song Lan get married with Xie who was a shepherd and raped her, but she was made as a model by the farmland for supporting the border and promoted as the cadre in educated youths. After several ups and downs of emotional life, she finally found a “happy life” as village women… An educated youth from Shanghai finally became a village woman and an innocent girl in pursuit of true love from the region south of the Yangtze River ended up as a slut. Xiayedi, a popular haunt for writers, was of stunning ability to breed beautiful tragedy. What was more stunning was the language full of images and sense of color and the expressed charming artistic conception and atmosphere. Passing of time, lamenting of age, complexity of human nature and competition of emotions were organically and quietly mixed. The good and evil of human nature and truth and falseness of emotion continuously contended in the fresh and beautiful images.
