作品通篇采用第一人称的叙述，讲述的是一个名叫端白的懵懂无知的王子，在老太后权力欲望的操纵下成了燮国的傀儡国王，虽对臣民拥有生杀大权，却时时生活在恐惧和焦虑中，他是他的祖母和母亲利用的政治工具，他想反抗却无能为力。一个不该作皇帝的人，一个没有做皇帝的野心，也没有能力做好皇帝的人当了皇上，难怪，端白和疯疯癫癫的老宫役孙信一次次地重复着一句不祥的话语燮国的灾难就要来了！灾难随时就会降临，端白心头一直有深深的阴影，因此他是哀怨的，也是无助的，整篇小说充满了挽歌式的感伤气息，凄美。
