✦ Synopsis
Effects of 17/?-and 'la-substituted 14a-steroids were studied by 'H and ''C NMR spectroscopy. A linear correlation was found between the 'H chemical shift of H-12/? and the ''C chemical shift of C-12 for C-17p substituted steroids and between the chemical shifts of H-14a and C-14 in C-'la-substituted compounds.

Ab initio proton and 13C NMR assignments for a stereoisomeric pair of 5b steroidal sapogenins, smilagenin (1) and sarsasapogenin (2), were accomplished using DEPT, COSY, TOCSY, HETCOR, HMQC, HMQC-TOCSY, HSQC-RELAY, HMBC and selective reverse INEPT techniques ; the 13C NMR assignments for 2 were con-
## Abstract ^13^C‐ and ^1^H‐NMR. spectra of __ortho__‐benzoquinone **1** and its methyl derivatives have been analysed. By means of heteronuclear double resonance experiments it is shown that assignments given in the literature for the olefinic carbon resonances of **1** and of a series of substitu
Proton and carbon-13 spectra of benzyl compounds of the general formula (C,H,CH,),X with a large variety of X substituents have been measured. While a linear relationship between the CH, chemical shift and the substituent electronegativity was found both for lH and lac, large deviations from lineari
