3-Cyclodextrm-salt mxtures were mvesttgated as sohd matrices for the room-temperature lmnmescence of tetrols Tetrols are degradation products from benzc(a]pyrene-DNA adducts and are stereolsomenc The lummescence spectral propertIes of the four tetrols showed slmdar properties when adsorbed on /3-cyclodextrm-salt mmtures Several "heavy atom" salts were tnvestlgated for enhancing the room-temperature phosphorescence of the tetrols However, there was only a moderate Increase m their phosphorescence wzth a heavy atom present In general, /3-cyclodextrm-sodmm chlonde matrlces were very effectwe m yleldmg phosphorescence from the tetrols For example, femtomole lmnts of detectlon were obtamed for the tetrols The room-temperature phosphorescence hfettmes of the adsorbed tetrols showed a wade range of values whxh depended on the charactenstxs of the soltd matrices,, but they enabled a sensttwe room-temperature me-resolved phosphorescence method to be developed for a nuxture of two of the tetrols Kqwordr Chenulummescence, Cyclodextnn, Phosphorescence, Tetrols Cyclodextrms are ohgosacchandes conslstmg of monomer glucose units connected via a-1,4 h&ages There are three cyclodextrms commeraally available, CP, /3-and y-cyclodextrm, consistmg of SIX, seven and eight glucose umts, respectlvely The geometnc shapes of the cyclodextrms IS that of a truncated cone The mterlor catty of the cyclodextrm 1s ahgned with ether-Ike oxygen and carbon-hydrogen bonds [l] The abrhty of cyclodextrms to sequester or "mclude" species wlthm therr hydrophobic mterlor cavity has led to their mcrease use m many analytical techmques E-41
