✦ Synopsis
A system has been established from isolated intact c h r o m o p l a s t s of Narcissus pseudonarcissus flowers that synthesizes geranylgeraniol, an u n k n o w n p o l y p r e n o i d alcohol, phytoene, and fl-carotene from [1-14C]isopentenyl p y r o p h o s p h a t e in a g o o d yield. Long chain p y r o p h o s p h a t e s are not accumulated. San 6706 inhibits the d e h y d r o g e n a t i o n of phytoene, whereas nicotine does not lead to an accumulation of lycopene. Separation and identification of polyprenoid lipids was p e r f o r m e d by H P L C . The properties and advantages of the c h r o m o p l a s t system are discussed.
