✦ Synopsis

The development of photieally evoked afterdischarges was investigated in rats between 8 and 30 days of age in ehronical experiments. The potentials were elicited using a stimulation flash frequency of 1,5 c. p. s. and were recorded from the optic cortex.

  1. The photically evoked potentials were fully developed until the 18th day of age.

  2. The first photically evoked afterdischarges appeared between 18 and 26 days of age; 50 per cent of the animals showed these afterdiseharges at the 20th day. The frequency of the afterdischarges amounted to 5.5--6.5 c. p. s. and was unchanged in the course of development.

  3. Using a light stimulus frequency of 6--7 c. p. s. photieally evoked recruitment appeared from the 20th day onwards.

A possible mechanism, which could explain these results, is discussed.
