The oxocarbonium ion [R-CEO]+ is shown to be present in CH,Cl, solutions of the addition compounds between benzoic and mesitoic acid or their chlorides, and five LEWIS acids: TiCl,, AlCl,, SbCl,, SbF, and H,SO, (H+). In CH,Cl, solutions of the addition compound 2,4, 6-(CH3),-C,H,COOH, AlC1, the existence of the mesitoylium ion has been confirmed by infrared and ultraviolet spectra and by nuclear magnetic resonance.
