✦ Synopsis

Artificial depolarisation is induced on ~ very short skeletal muscle of frog (m. flex. superfic, prop. dig. II.). The technique originally described by KAVA~, consists in the application of rectangular voltage pulses of various duration by means of Ag-AgC1 electrodes, one of which is connected to the tendon while the other is immersed into the bath fluid (Cholin-Ringer in all experiments, temperature 1--4°C). Very short impulses (duration 20 msec) induce a contracture with a time course similar to a single twitch. In this case, the peak time overlasts the impulse duration considerably. With increasing impulse duration, peak time and amplitude of the contraeture increase while the time difference between the onset of repolarisation and that of relaxation approaches zero. Relaxation time increases with the duration of the electrical impulses as long as the peak tension rises. The relation of the peak time to the relaxation time increases with increasing impulse duration.
