✦ Synopsis
The influence of NO;, CIO, , ethylene glycol, giycerol and sorbital on the hmitmg current density is studied during electrolytic polishing of Pb,,, Sn,,,Te in 0,l M NaOH. Under polishing conditions the rate ofdissolution in these electrolytes is determined by the diffusion of hydroxide ions from the interior of the electrolytic solution towards the partially passivated Pb,.,Sn,,,Te-surface. Therefore, it is assumed that the levelling of surface roughness takes place according to the diffusion mechanism proposed by Edwards [J. electroclzem. Ser. 100,223 (195311. The useful effect ofadmixtures such as CIO, and sorbitol on pohshing consists in the partial or entire depassivation of the surface.
