Abstract
γ‐MnO~2~ can be partly reduced with N~2~H~2~ without changing its lattice. The volume of the elementary cell increases approximatly linearly with decreasing Mn^IV^ content. It is assumed that the reduction occurs in a one phase topochemical reaction, electrons and protons migrating through the lattice according to the formula
