in the order -COO€€ < CONHR < CN : the phosphorylated ,9-hydroxypropionitrile H,PO,-OCH,CH,CN is dephosphoryhted to the extent of SO"/" a t looo C. in N NaOE-1 in about 4 minutes. This dephosphorylation is considered t o he B hydrolysis (and not a ,&elimination) as phosphosalicylonitrilewhich is not capable of undergoing a p-elimination --is hydrolyzed with the same ease. The possible incidence of these findings on the interpretation of the case of alkaline dephosphorylation of phosphopeptides is emphasized.
