Air-temperature differences between a~ricultural crops and screens

Air-temperature differences are compared between screen and agricultural crops measured at Weihenstephan (hilly land, 35 km north-northeast from Munich) and at Rinn near Innsbruck, Austria; 300-400 m above the river valley Inn. Examples show that the mentioned daily temperature differences do not depend only upon crop type but on topoclimate as well. By evening hours, the development of strong ground inversion at Weihenstephan gives rise to a huge drop of the crop temperature below that of the screen. This cooling effect is diminished due to mountain wind at Rinn. Therefore, it is advisable not only to compare the temperatures within plant communities with the screen temperature but also with the temperature profile above grass or bare soil for the corresponding heights of that of plant communities.
