✦ Synopsis

The formation of gels during the gamma radiolysis of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PNVP) solutions was investigated under various conditions. The swelling of the resulting gels was determined. Radiationchemical yields of cross-linking were calculated from the experimental data. A comparative study of the radiolysis of aqueous and methanolic solutions of PNVP made it possible to determine the relative contributions of "direct" and "indirect" effects of the radiation. The results are discussed and it is shown that radiochemical cross-linking is an interesting route for the preparation of gels of controlled structure.
