Qui êtes-vous ? haletai-je. L'inconnu recula et pourtant je ne vis pas ses jambes bouger, elle était presque à la fenêtre. Et l'air me manqua à nouveau, envolé dans un cri étranglé de terreur. Je sentis mon dos s'incruster dans le fauteuil, mes yeux se river sur l'apparition, mes lèvres trembler. Car je voyais maintenant le réverbère de la rue voisine...à travers elle. Tom Wallace n'avait jamais vraiment cru à l'hypnotisme. Jusqu'au jour où un fantôme lui demande de venger son assassinat.
Considéré comme l'un des maîtres du fantastique (Je suis une légende, L'homme qui rétrécit…) et du policier (Les seins de glace, Jour de fureur…), Richard Matheson a écrit là un roman qui relève de ses deux genres de prédilection.
