The reaction of bis(1,1'-triphenylmethyl-imidazol-4-yl) alkanes ((CH 2 ) n bridged imidazoles L(CH 2 ) n L, n = 3±6) with chloro bridged complexes [R 3 P(Cl)M(l-Cl)M(Cl)PR 3 ] (M = Pd, Pt; R = Et, Pr, Bu) affords the dinuclear compounds [Cl 2 (R 3 P)M±L(CH 2 ) n L±M(PR 3 )Cl 2 ] 1±17. The structures of [Cl 2 (Et 3 P)Pd±L(CH 2 ) 3 L±Pd(PEt 3 )Cl 2 ] (1), [Cl 2 (Bu 3 P)Pd±L(CH 2 ) 4 L±Pd(PBu 3 )Cl 2 ] (10), [Cl 2 (Et 3 P)-Pd±L(CH 2 ) 5 L±Pd(PEt 3 )Cl 2 ] (3), [Cl 2 (Et 3 P)Pt±L(CH 2 ) 3 L±Pt-(PEt 3 )Cl 2 ] (13) with trans Cl±M±Cl groups were determined by X-ray diffraction. Similarly the complexes [Cl 2 (Cp*)-Ir±L(CH 2 ) n L±Ir(Cp*)Cl 2 ] (n = 4±6) are obtained from [Cp*(Cl)Ir(l-Cl) 2 Ir(Cl)Cp*] and the methylene bridged bis(imidazoles).
