✦ Synopsis
Starting from an equation previously introduced by the present writer a new formula is derived for the internal field in a gaseous or liquid dielectric in which a homogeneous field prevails.
It appears that in general the mean internal field in the spaces occupied by the molecules is greater than the mean internal field in the interstices. Moreover, in the case of a mixture, the internal field has different mean values in the spaces occupied by the different kinds of molecules.
The differences are sometimes considerable. Thus in the case of a diluted solution of a dipole substance in a non-polar solvent the internal field in the dipole molecules is many times as great as in other places in the liquid.
It is shown, hm~;ever, that the mean value (in space) of the internal field is exactly equal to 1_. o r e n t z' well-known expression 4 F =:E+--~P. 3
This is i,a complete agreement with the restrictions under which the derivation of L o r e n t z' formula applies.
