On the Self‐Decomposition of 2‐Chloro‐4‐methoxy‐1‐naphthol

On standing, 2‐chloro‐4‐methoxy‐1‐naphthol (1a) rapidly decomposes under formation of the dinaphthofuranol 10a. The reaction is interpreted as a dehalogenation of 1a yielding 6, oxidation of the latter and acid‐catalyzed cyclisation of the intermediate 9.
