✦ Synopsis
Chlorobenzenes activated by a single nitro group in the ortho position undergo smooth nucleophilic substitution by the potassium salts of ethyl cyanoacetate and ethyl malonate in tert.‐butanol as solvent. The 2‐nitrophenyl malonic ester derivates (2a) and (2b) so obtained are easily converted into 2‐nitrophenyl acetic acid and derivatives of oxindole and indole respectively.
