Phenyl-azo naphthalene dyestuffs, which arc substituted in o and in o' position by hydroxv and amino (or aikylamino) groups, have been metaliiscd with agents releasing either Co" ions or CoIIl ions, the 1 : 2 complexes formed being examined by means of clcctrophoresis and alkalimetric titratiuns. The amino or alkylamino groups are tleprotonised only if they are in the naphthalcnc I-adical, or, if prcscnt in t h e benzene radical they are acidified by electrophilic substitiients. Mctallisinf: wi tli Co" ions yielded usually 1 : 2 Co"' complexes. With one particular dyestuff, however, a 1 : 2 Col' complex was obtaincd; it is a s s u n i d tliat this is due t o a relatively lowcr oxidation potcntial of this dyestuff.
