417 prematures were treated according to standard therapeutic principles during a period of 2~ years (1.1. 1969--30. 4. 1971). For 1 year and 10 months (16.6. 1969--30. 4. 1971) 155 prematures out of the total of 417 received additional treatment with Xantinol nicotinate (Complamin | Xavin| Sadamin| In 27 prematures changes of acid-base values were measured 10 to 12 rain after intravenous injection of Complamin | or Xavin | The values for pCO 2 decreased, and for pH increased, both significantly, without showing a statistically valid difference between the action of Complamin | and Xavin |
In order to compare mortality in the 2 groups of prematures with and without additional Xantinol nicotinate treatment they were subdivided according to weight and pit value during admission. Disregarding the extremes (weight below 1001 g; pH less than 7.01) there was no difference in mortality between the two main groups. However, in 3 subgroups of prematures receiving additional Xantinol nicotinate treatment, the mortality was higher than in the respective control groups; for 2 of these group comparisons the difference was statistically significant.
In spite of methodological reservations we believe that Xantinol nicotinate should not be used in prematures suffering from respiratory distress syndrome.
