A convenient synthesis of Cbz-protected b-amino ketones is reported. Benzyl carbamates and a,b-unsaturated ketones furnish the conjugate addition products in the presence of a Cu(II) catalyst under mild conditions. Other weakly basic nitrogen nucleophiles can also be used in this reaction.
