Using symmetry selection rules it is shown that the S r + TX intersystem crossing (ISC) process in (;:on-rotating) platrar condensed aromatic compounds with lowest states of the X,ZI \* type leads to triplet states with the two unpaired electrons spinning in the molecular plane. β¦ Synopsis
The observed change in the 10.38 GHz PhlDR signal of pyrazine in durene at 1.6 K upon the appliation of a magnetic fieid of O-500 G cannot be explained by the direct Sl(n, n*) l---f T1 (n, rr*) intersystem crossing process. The observed re- sults an be computer fitted if the crossing is assumed to involve an intermediate triplet state with zero-field parameters sim-iIar to those of the lowest i~,'n* state of scbstitu?ed benzene. The reIative probability of the direct to the indirect crossing to the different spin levels is concluded. The limitations of the mclhod are discussed.
