✦ Synopsis

The observed change in the 10.38 GHz PhlDR signal of pyrazine in durene at 1.6 K upon the appliation of a magnetic fieid of O-500 G cannot be explained by the direct Sl(n, n*) l---f T1 (n, rr*) intersystem crossing process. The observed re- sults an be computer fitted if the crossing is assumed to involve an intermediate triplet state with zero-field parameters sim-iIar to those of the lowest i~,'n* state of scbstitu?ed benzene. The reIative probability of the direct to the indirect crossing to the different spin levels is concluded. The limitations of the mclhod are discussed.

Using symmetry selection rules it is shown that the S r + TX intersystem crossing (ISC) process in (;:on-rotating) platrar condensed aromatic compounds with lowest states of the X,ZI \* type leads to triplet states with the two unpaired electrons spinning in the molecular plane. Out-of-plane distort
