✦ Synopsis
18Cr8Ni and 18Cr25Ni alloys have been studied using 7-resonance spectroscopy. At T < 100 K an increase in the isomeric shift to more negative values was found in 18Cr8Ni As the region of the isomeric shift change coincides with the invar-anomaly temperature, observed in this alloy, the isomeric shift behaviour was associated with an increase in electron density on the iron cores, which takes place at the 71 ~-72 transition in 7-iron electron configurations. Differences in the isomeric shift behaviour of 18Cr8Ni and 18Cr25Ni alloys seems to be associated with the amount of the unstable 71 configuration, which at low temperatures transforms to 72; this is also confirmed by the drop in the value of the elastic modulus which occurs in these alloys over the same temperature range.
