A criterion is derived for yielding ahead of a dislocation pile-up subject to a non-uniform shear stress. The theory is applied to the problem of twin initiation by slip bands in the vicinity of a crack tip, the predictions being related to experimental results and the fracture mechanics approach to crack extension.
