Isaac Bashevis Singer est né près de Varsovie en 1904. Après des études qui le destinaient en principe au rabbinat, il commence à écrire et publie son premier livre en 1934. Puis il émigre aux Etats-Unis. Il est l'auteur d'une vingtaine de romans et de recueils de nouvelles, tous écrits en yiddish.
Le Prix Nobel de littérature lui a été décerné en 1978. Il est mort en 1991.
