Preliminary studies have been made of the preparation of high density YBCO by hot pressing techniques. Materials prepared at 1000°C under an axial load of 1 tonne on a 2.5 cm diameter die have been characterized and shown to exhibit superconducting behaviour after oxygenation for extended periods.
The complete reaction pathway describing the degradation of YBa2Cu307\_, by ZrO 2 is determined. Initial dissociation of the superconductor into YzBaCuOs, CuO and BaCuO2 is in accordance with the YBaCuO ternary phase diagram. Subsequent decomposition of Y2BaCuO5 in the presence of CuO and ZrO2 yield
