The digital difference spectrum technique in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has proved to be effective for the analysis of the functional groups introduced by surface oxidation treatment of carbon fibers. The major functional groups introduced to the carbon fiber surface by surface oxidation are hydroxyl and carboxyl groups, Disordering of the crystal lattice is also observed together with generation of carboxyl groups in the case of surface oxidation of graphite fibers.
