✦ Synopsis

Non-parametric statistics are based on the principle of analysing a dataset without reference to any parametric statistical model, or `letting the data speak for themselves'. The results of a nonparametric statistical analysis are often parsimoniously presented by using graphical methods. As HaÈ rdle and Linton (1994) note, non-parametric techniques are advantageously employed for displaying the particular features of a dataset, for diagnostic checking, and for estimating a model without any prior about a particular parametric functional form.

There is now a growing literature which advocates this model-free graphical approach. Useful and well-written references include

It is the premise of this book that even at a beginning level, perturbation theory should be presented not as an isolated collection of cookbook techniques but as a part of the mainstream of mathematics. This means that theorems covered in other mathematics courses will be encountered. This book mak
