β¦ Synopsis
The scientific program at the recent International Congress in Zaragoza reflected the rich variety of ongoing research in the history of mathematics. Among 60 symposia, no fewer than 20 were devoted either to mathematical themes or to subjects in which mathematics received major attention. In addition, the Congress featured seven scientific sections that dealt with history of mathematics and two plenary lectures which, fittingly, examined Arabic achievements in the mathematical sciences. Jan Hogendijk's lecture on "AI-Mu'taman ibn Hud, King of Saragossa and Brilliant Mathematician" was actually delivered in the former home of al-Mu'taman, the Palacio de la Aljaferia. The other plenary lecture was presented by Roshdi Rashed, who spoke on "Le d6veloppement de l'optique en pays arabes."
The following lectures were delivered in the 20 symposia (numbered according to the Congress program) and seven scientific sections mentioned above: SYMPOSIA
