✦ Synopsis
Many ionization potentials of molecules and molecular fragments have been detected by mass spectrometry and it is probably in this area that the technique has in the past been of most use to electrochemists. As the title indicates, the formation of negative ions is increasingly being studied, and chapter 7, which deals with this topic, will be of particular interest. A list of known appearance potentials of negative ions is given in the Appendix; unfortunately they do not as yet include many species of interest to solution chemistry, apart from well-characterised species such as the halide ions. However, the general discussion of mechanisms of ion pair production, dissociative detachment, and temporary non-dissociative detachment are of interest for comparison with solution and heterogeneous processes. A table of electron affinities is also included in the Appendix: unfortunately this is not a critical survey but only a list of values quoted from a number of sources and should be used with caution. Owing to its wide range this book is particularly useful to the non-specialist in the field.
