## Abstract X‐ray (XS) and X‐ray photoelectron (XPS) spectra are reported for vanadium oxides. Because of the multivalent character of vanadium in the oxide system high quality measurements can be used for chemical shift investigation. Both inner level and valence band spectroscopy give information

✦ Synopsis
X-ray tube spectra make an essential contribution to the quantitative description of experimental setups or for quantitative x-ray analysis. After an outline of the historical development of the description of tube spectra the approaches given by Wiederschwinger, Ebel et al. Schossmann et al. and Pella et al. are treated in detail. Summarizing the theoretical treatment and the applications, it can be stated that both approaches give comparable results over a certain spectral range. Pella's approach is restricted to electron incidence angles of 90 • and application of Pella's spectral responses in the lower keV range should be avoided.

## Abstract We present X‐ray spectral analysis of the super‐soft source CAL87 using ASCA, Chandra, XMM‐Newton observations. Early ASCA CCD spectrum reported a strong oxygen absorption edge, which is considered to originate in the an optically thick white‐dwarf atmosphere. On the other hand, contemp
## Abstract We explore the nature of ultraluminous X‐ray sources through detailed investigations of their spectral shape using some of the highest quality data available in the XMM‐Newton public archives. Phenomenological models allow us to characterise their spectra, while more ‘physically‐motivat
