A well-characterized Eu-doped Bi2Sr2Ca~\_xEuxCu2Oy (x=0 to 1 ) system has been studied using core-level photoemission. The trivalent Eu is found to be incorporated into the lattice, causing an increase in the valence states ofBi, Sr and Ca and a decrease in the Cu valence. The observed superconducto
