โœฆ Synopsis

Satellite structure has been observed at about 3.1,5.4,6.4 and 14.5 eV below the main peaks in the X-my photoelectron spectra of the Ti and 0 Ievels of TiOl. These satellites arise from transitions. accompanying primary photoemission, betureen predominant& 0~~ states of the Iigmd and wrious excited states in the conduction band, The energies found fit the transitions calculated by Claude et al. for an etectronic band structure cakufated by a combined tight-binding and pseudopstentiaf method. This paper deals with the electronic structure of TiO, [a do compound) studied via the satellites which appear below the main peaks due to Ti and 0 in the X-ray'photoelectron spectrum (XI'S). These satellites are interpreted as being due to transitions between OTp states and excited states in the conduction band. Earlier XPS work on shake-up satellites of TiO, [l--3] reported the presence of only one satellite for each 2pl/2 and 2p3j2 primary Ti line, separated from the main peaks by 132%14 eV_ Sen et al. suggested that a satellite might be present at a distance of ea. 5 -_ eV from the mam Trzp rla peak [3f. By contrast, measurements carried out using other techniques (reffectivity, electroahsorption, electrorefIeetance, etc.) demonstrate that a series of transitions exist in the range 3-8 eV f5-81.

A detailed experimental study of the 2s-and 2p XPS spectra of TiOa revealed new (char~transfer) shake-ip satellite structures (at 4.0-5.0 eV from the main peaks) which can be explained using molecular orbital rcprescntation.
