✦ Synopsis

The electronic structure of the spinel-type LiMn 2 O 4 as the cathode material for the application in secondary batteries was probed using both Mn K-and L 23 -edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra. Based on the energy shifts of the absorption peaks in the XANES spectrum correlated to the effective charge, the valence of Mn in LiMn 2 O 4 was determined to be &4Ψ‰. This suggests that the chemical substitution of low valent Li Ψ‰ ions into the Mn sites is possible to result in high valence of Mn.

The transport and magnetic properties of stoichiometric and Li-rich LiMn 2 O 4 spinels are investigated. Clear anomalies, which are associated with a structural phase transition from cubic to tetragonal, are observed in the temperature dependence of resistivity and susceptibility in the stoichiometr
